Atomica Eat Drink, West End, Brisbane

BFF and I had a Sunday morning at West End after we dropped Shufflin’ Boy off at Davies Park for his rowing practice. This suburb is the Titirangi of Brisbane; it has a bohemian vibe, and is festooned with various rustic-looking cafés and stores. Even in the middle of winter, Brisbane is sunny and warm (~23°C), so plenty of people were dining alfresco on the sidewalks.

We decided on Atomica Eat Drink (173 Boundary Road, West End), tempted by their use of organic or free-range ingredients. You can choose to sit indoors or on wooden benches outside.

They proudly proclaim that they use Barambah Organic milk. As much as I do try to support the organics movement, I’m skeptical on the taste difference, - I subscribe to the belief that freshness trumps organics (though this probably doesn’t work the same way for dairy products). To my surprise, my flat white ($3.50) does taste different, better flavour and it is definitely creamier. BFF said her latte ($3.50) was the best she’s had for a long time.

I chose off the specials list, which is written on the glass panels on the walls, - sautéed wild mushroom on buttered sourdough with truffled scrambled eggs ($16.50). The aroma of the mushrooms and truffle oil was tantalising; and the scrambled eggs were delicious. The two things that detracted were that the mushrooms were a bit too salty and the bread seemed a bit stale (the bread was somewhat dry and the crust was too tough).

BFF had the huge breakfast of bacon, eggs, lamb and rosemary sausage, mushrooms, roasted tomato, potato and sweet potato bubble & squeak, served with tomato jam and toasted sourdough ($17.90). The very good, - bubble & squeak, sausage and sweet tomato jam, and eggs. The not so good, - the dry bacon and bread.

Overall, this was still a very good breakfast and an excellent café, for its ambience, level of service and food offerings.

Atomica Eat Drink is open 6 days (closed Tuesdays), 7am – 3pm.
